This is an effort to monitor butterflies by applying the trapping protocol of the ICMBio National Monitoring Program. This initiative is part of the PELD APA do Gama e Cabeça de Veado, coordinated by the University of Brasilia. We have the support of specialists to help identify the species observed. The data will be used to estimate the abundance of populations in the Federal District. This initiative is linked to a worldwide effort to monitor butterflies as one of the indicators of the state of conservation of biodiversity.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 2,579 records.

Geographic Coverage

The “Área de Proteção Ambiental das Bacias do Gama e Cabeça de Veado” (AGCV) is located in the central area of the Cerrado domain in Brazil. This area of environmental protection is important due to its strategic localization as a buffer area between urban areas and the natural environments in DF, and by harboring hydric resources from two basins. There are three contiguous conservation units located inside the AGCV: Estação Ecológica do Jardim Botânico de Brasília (EEJBB; Ecologica Station of the Botanic Garden of Brasilia), the Reserva Ecológica do Roncador - IBGE (Recor - IBGE; Roncador Ecological Reserve) and Fazenda Água Limpa (FAL; Agua Limpa Farm, the ecological and agricultural field station of the Universidade de Brasília. In addition to those there is a contiguous 5,000-h area which is well-preserved, locally known as Alpha area. This latter and the three other conservation units are located 25 km SW of Brasília, Federal District, and together comprise about 15,000 ha in the core part of the Cerrado domain. A mosaic of Cerrado vegetation, including open vegetation, typical savanna formations, and forests occur in the region.

Cerrados do Planalto Central - Structure, dynamics and ecological processes The PELD- AGCV is centralized in medium and long term ecological studies in the areas of preservation that constitute the APA Gama and Cabeça de Veado: IBGE Ecological Reserve, Experimental Farm Água Limpa and Ecological Station of the Botanical Garden of Brasilia. The PELD-AGCV site addresses the main problems related to the conservation and use of biodiversity and natural resources of the Cerrado, separated in two axes according to the environments considered: terrestrial ecosystems and aquatic ecosystems

Study Area Description The Environmental Protection Area (APA Gama e Cabeça de Veado - AGCV), located in the Federal District of Brazil, has about 25,000 hectares continuous and a perimeter of approximately 67.000m. The full protection area was created in April 21, 1986, but the ecological reserves inside it had already been stablished before. The AGCV includes urban, rural and preservation and experimentation areas. This region is very important considering the conservation of the Cerrado in the Federal District, considering that most of the original vegetation has been destroyed in this Federation Unit, mainly due to agricultural practices, land parceling, mining, deforestation for use in charcoal, seasonal fires and urban unplanned growth. The areas corresponding to the Agua Limpa Farm, Botanical Garden of Brasília, IBGE Ecological Reserve concentrate most studies related to this project, and are protected for more than 40 years.

Sampling Methods

The frugivorous butterflies were sampled by 32 UA arranged in cerrado habitats. Each UA was composed of four Van Someren-Rydon (VSR) attraction traps. The traps were lured with banana fermented in sugarcane juice for 48 hours and stayed in the field for eight consecutive days, with the lures being restored every 48 hours.
